Antibiotic Allergy-clinical Relevance and Consequences
نویسنده
چکیده
Antibiotic allergy is one of the most commonly encountered problems in clinical practice. The symptoms may range from mildly annoying to life threatening. Drug allergies can become a major problem for patients with the multiple drug allergy syndrome, and more so since the emergence of antibiotic resistant organisms often limits the choice of antibiotics that can be used. β-lactam antibiotics (penicillins and cephalosporins) are the most common causes of drug allergy, and also the best studied. This article reviews the management of patients with allergies to β-lactam antibiotics.

متن کاملPrevalence of beta-lactam allergy: a retrospective chart review of drug allergy assessment in a predominantly pediatric population
BACKGROUND Research suggests that 90% of patients labeled beta-lactam allergic are able to tolerate penicillins following further assessment. This study aims to define and describe the frequency of true beta-lactam allergy following allergy patient evaluation in a predominantly pediatric population. METHODS 306 primary care patients referred between January 2010 and June 2015 were assessed fo...
متن کاملConsequences of avoiding β-lactams in patients with β-lactam allergies.
BACKGROUND The choice of empiric antibiotics for the treatment of gram-negative bacilli (GNB) bloodstream infections (BSIs) in patients presenting with a β-lactam (BL) allergy is often a difficult decision given that these agents are first-line treatment in many guidelines. OBJECTIVE We sought to compare rates of clinical failure between patients with a history of BL allergy who received eith...
متن کاملApproach to Penicillin Allergy – A Survey
Individual approaches to the diagnosis and management of penicillin allergy are practiced by clinicians. This cross-sectional survey of physicians was aimed at exploring their ways of dealing with diagnosis and management of penicillin G allergy. Of the 235 respondents, 63% believed patients’ self-reported history of penicillin allergy and avoided using penic...
متن کاملAntibiotic administration early in life impairs specific humoral responses to an oral antigen and increases intestinal mast cell numbers and mediator concentrations.
In this study, we assessed the effect of administering the antibiotic amoxicillin to rat pups on the immune response to orally fed ovalbumin (OVA). We first established that amoxicillin administration durably altered the gut microbiota of these animals. In parallel, we observed that the induction of the specific humoral response to ovalbumin was impaired when it occurred during antibiotic admin...
